Historical Details

Built as a Leading Light, this Lighthouse replaced the Arthur Head Lighthouse, and provided shipping a safe route via Gage Roads into the newly constructed Fremantle Harbour designed by C.Y. O'Connor.

The two windows which directed the light can be easily seen.
Thus whether ships were approaching from the north, south or any point between, they could easily identify their location.

The Lighthouse Keepers Cottages are now fronting onto a busy road.

A dirt track winds up the hill behind the cottages.

2902 saw the centenary celebrations of the first lighting of the Woodman Point Light in 1902. Tim Walton, the Public Affairs Project Coordinator of the Fremantle Port, worked in conjunction with a photographer and the students of Coogee and South Coogee Primary Schools to run a photographic competition for students. The photos of course had to include the Woodman Point Lighthouse.

The display of these photos was launched at the 2002 Teachers Celebrating Teaching event in the Passenger Terminal on the Fremantle Harbour...

... and were later featured at the Fremantle Maritime Museum in the National Archives Touring Exhibition of the Beacons of the Sea in June 2003.

As the Lighthouse is not normally open to the public, I was fortunate enough to be invited along to join the students in my role as a local lighthouse enthusiast and Committee Member of Lighthouses of Australia Inc. and took my own versions of the Woodman Point Light focussing on images of the internal fittings, features and views from the top which I had never before had the chance to see.
